Krishnanagar’s Ranikutihi seeped with memories of Tagore
Tagore at that time was gaining recognition for his new style of singing. His modern approach of singing irked the puritans. It had a similar effect on the classical exponents present in the jalsa. To mock Tagore, his song was resung by Satya Lahiri with harmonium. His poker faced comment after the performance “one needs to learn flute in order to play it, not lament about it.”
Chowdhury’s house passed many hands, ultimately to be named as Ranikutihi. Ranikutihi is in ruins now. It would have been devoured by real-estate sharks if not protested by scholar Mohit Roy. He set up a group to preserve this site seeped with memories of Tagore. To celebrate Tagore’s 150th year various measures has been taken in here too.
