... I would like to show my appreciation for the writer who penned the review for the new movie: Devdas. I'm surprised that you never published his/her name. In my opinion, this writer wrote a brutal ("Kick Ass" as they say in America) but amusing and accurate review of this movie version of Sarat Chandra's classic novel. I loved it to the extent that I forwarded it to several of my friends. Please reveal his/her name in the future and you should also let this writer do more reviews in the future. We love his/her style and the fan club is growing. ..

Recently my wife and I had an opportunity to see the Hindi movie "Devdas" in Toronto, Canada. We are totally disappointed watching an unrealistic, boring, mumbo, jumbo version of a classic novel. Thanks for the director's imaginary ideas, namely the dance of Paru's mother, duet dance of Paru and Chandramukhi. We think Mirosoft's owner Bill Gate will blink seeing the wealth of the families in Devdas. Finally we have a request to the director, in future please indicate the full name of a person not P.C.Barua, it is Pramathesh Barua.

I found the cinema review to be very useful. You have saved me 3 hours of my life by having to not see a bad movie. I am eternally grateful for that.
I do not think there is anything wrong with making a Hindi movie out of a Bengali story. The same movie has been done before with better results. It is an honor to see a movie made into another language and another setting. Roy has made a movie based on Ibsen and it has only given credence to Ibsen and the Bengali setting where this movie is set.
It is all the more irritating to see people spending a lot of money to no end. There is nothing bad about spending money to get better quality acting, photography and setting. The general public seem to be blind to quality and are swayed by vanity and glamour.
It is refreshing to see someone analyze a movie for what it is. No amount of money and glamour can make up for bad acting and directing. thank you again for a critical analysis to save my time and energy.

It is amazing to see how people's taste has changed.I read the reviewes in Daily Telegraph but still went to see the movie as I was told by some of my friends here that if you don't compare the old Devdas with the new, you will enjoy the movie. But I was disappointed. It would have been tolerated if the producer called the movie by some other name. Then the people who have read the story or seen the old films, could have taken it as a copy to Sarat Chatterjee's Devdas just like many Hindi films are copied from other films.
This film is doing fine in London.Because people are still living in an imaginary world. You don't have to spend lot of money to make a good film. How much money did Satyajit Roy spent to make Pather Panchali? He received an Oscar for that film.
After I came out of the hall I felt I just watched a fairytale (Rupkatha).Everything was in excess.Even when there were candles, there were millions of them.Isn't there any limit of unreality?

I've enjoyed a lot while watching this movie. Madhuri proved herself as the best actress. Everybody in this movie tried their level best to fulfil every character. As a bengali, me and my husband have enjoyed a lot while watching this movie. thank u very much.

As far as I know, Devdas never went to London. He never left the nation.

Hi!
It was not only a disappointment, but a SHAME, to watch. That a director can take a nice story and totally muder it, under the premise of "creative license" has been proven.
Firstly- forgiving all the other changes, it is pure blasphemy to show the Durga Poojo dance. Would any of the Bollywood directors think of showing such a dance in a Ram temple? I would guess not.
Secondly, while focussing on 'grandeur' the director has forgotten that there is a story. The narration is disjointed and fails to show effectively the emotional turmoil of any the characters.
Sadly, it's hype that gets attention in today's world. Non-Indians watching this movie are making the impression that it's not even a good story! This is certainly not how we would like the world to be viewing our classics.
The biggest shame is that we as an audience have become so inured to lack of quality in the art of cinema, that we still not only watch these movies, but forgive the inadequacies all too easliy.

I totally disliked the film. It has killed, according to my opinion, the inherrant social & cultural rhetorics of the period. Some style of family drama shown were almost impossible to be seen in that period. Declaring the story by Sharatbabu was an insult. The story could have been declared as 'based on' his novel. If the poor writer was burried, he would have stood up on the audacity of attaching his name to this film. The film could have been named simply as 'Maar daala' or 'Ramdas' or whatever. This sort of words or laguage in a song-could you imagine in that period? Music was pretty good as expected by the director. It is quite farcical for the film of having a nomination Oscar. Certainly the group who has selected the film for the award is not aware of the culture or the behavioural aspects of the Bengali society at that period. NB-Your writing is certainly great.

I think that the great books like ‘Devdas’ by our beloved kathashilpi Sarat Chandra Chottopadhaya’ should not be changed for any commercial reasons. I have seen that movie at Sydney. It is an entertainment only not the facts. It would have been more encouraging and interesting if it would develop following the original book, one of my favourite books. It is recommended that a rule should be made not to alter any great books.
Best regards,
