Dr. Kanu Chatterjee is the Lucie Stern Professor of Cardiology at the University of California at San Francisco. He is a world-renowned physician in the field of Cardiology. He was born in East Bengal of Undivided India. His parents migrated to Calcutta after the partition of India. He graduated from R G Kar Medical College in 1956. His father died just before he graduated and so he took up the job of a Medical Officer at the IISCO Hospital at Burnpur to support his family. In 1963 he left India for London, UK to get the MRCP qualification. He later moved to USA where he did most of his work in Cardiology. His contribution to Cardiology has been in the field of vasodilators, heart failure, and coronary hemodynamics. Dr. Chatterjee and his team at UCSF developed the practical application of Swan-Ganz catheter, a vital instrument in any Intensive Care Unit. His work has led to a revolution in the treatment of congestive heart failure. He is the member of numerous national and international medical societies and is on the editorial board of many prestigious medical journals including Circulation, American Journal of Cardiology, and Journal of Critical Care. He is loved and respected by his students at the UCSF, where the Resident Education Center was recently named after him.
