Partha Sarathi Dasgupta
Recently Partha Sarathi Dasgupta, Frank Ramsay professor
of economics at the University of Cambridge, has been honored with
Knighthood for his services to economics. Like Amartya Sen, Dasgupta
restored an ethical element to economics through his espousal of social
well-being. His main contribution to economics was in the realm of economic
theory where his research dealt with issues including trade, development
planning, welfare and justice, technological change, the economics of
malnutrition, taxation, optimal growth theory, and game theory.
Dasgupta is originally from India (born in Dhaka in 1942, now in
Bangladesh). Earned his Banchelors Degree from Delhi. Moved to Cambridge
and completed PhD. Dasgupta has published numerous publications and has
taught in different world famous institutions such as London School of
Economics, Harvard University, Princeton University, University of
Cambridge etc.
While receiving a honorary doctorate degree Dasgupta said "Scientists
don't work for the money, otherwise they would be doing something else. A
scientist wants to be read by others. An honorary doctorate is recognition
that at least some people have noticed your work." Wageningen
Economist Professor Henk Folmer predicted that Dasgupta stands a good
chance of winning a Nobel Prize for Economics within the next ten years.
"He is a world class economist, especially as he is master of the
whole range of economics from mathematical economics to anthropological
economics.
