Purnendu Chatterjee Purnendu Chatterjee is a well known name among NRI Bengalis in West Bengal. He did B.Tech. from IIT, Kharagpur in 1971 and then MS and PhD in OR (Operation Research) from University of Berkeley, California in 1974. From 1974 to 1976, he was a research associate at the Stanford Research Institute. In 1976 Dr. Chatterjee joined McKinsey & Company and in 1983 became a principal. At McKinsey he led major strategy and organization assignments for CEOs of large industrial companies in the United States, Europe and Japan. His clients included companies in electronics, information technology, chemicals and manufacturing industries. He left McKinsey in 1986 to invest in public market and private companies with George Soros of Soros Fund Management(SFM). Purnendu founded The Chatterjee Group (TCG) , an affiliate of the New York based SFM. Apart from TCG, Dr. Chatterjee is on the board of directors of R&B Falcon Corporation, Indigo, N.V; and Global Power Investments (a joint venture with GE Capital and International Finance Corporation). He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. Overall, his IT plans in West Bengal is ambitious. One important venture of Mr. Chatterjee is CATS, a joint venture software firm with Computer Associates, USA. CATS has its state-of-the art technology software technology development center at Salt Lake. He managed to have a tie up with United Airlines, to set up a software development center in the city ( Sky-Tech Solutions). He invested around Rs.5000 crores in Haldia Petrochemical project in West Bengal and is a member of the board. He is married to the daughter of Viren Shah, West Bengal's governor and lives at Central Park, New York City. Nov 2000
