Pratyush, the center for welfare of the downtrodden children and women, is situated approx. 2 km. away from Barasat town. The center primarily deals with economic, educational, social, health and hygienic welfare of the uncared poor children and their mothers. This NEWS LETTER portrays a brief description of the activities of Pratyush. Hope, the readers (well-wishers and experts in various areas) will send their opinion to make this endeavor successful.

FOUNDATION DAY CELEBRATED

The foundation day of Pratyush was observed on 9th January 2008 at its temporary premises. The students, teachers, guardians and members of Pratyush took part in songs, recitation, dance and other attractive programmes. Sweets and snacks were distributed among all present on this great occasion.

THE 62ND REPUBLIC DAY CELEBRATED

The children and the Organizing Members of Pratyush celebrated the 62nd REPUBLIC DAY on 26th January, 2008. The programme was structured with flag hoisting, garlanding, inaugural song, coral songs, recitation, and national anthem in this order. Some Organizing Members delivered speeches on different aspects of Independence and importance of Republic Day. At the end of the programme, the participating children received biscuits and sweets.


THE 111TH BIRTH ANNIVERSARY OF NETAJI CELEBRATED

Organizing Members of Pratyush conducted celebration of the 111th Birth Anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose on 23rd January, 2008 in the temporary premises of Pratyush. The whole area was decorated with coloured papers and national flag (made of papers). The programme was framed with National flag hoisting, Garlanding, Group songs, Recitation and Speech on different aspects of Netaji’s life and activities. Biscuits and toffees were distributed among the participating children as well as among their mothers.

ANNUAL EVALUATION - CUM - CULTURAL COMPETITION

Every year the organizer of Pratyush conducts an evaluation of the ability, attitude and cultural performance of its children in the form of cultural competition. This year the programme was held on 5th [Saturday] and 6th [Sunday] of January 2008 with full enthusiasm and lives enjoyment. This is the first time the children of Pratyush built two decorated gates at the entrance of the Road and Campus under the encouragement of Members of Pratyush. There was a temporary stall for exhibition and sale of jute-based handicraft products made by the mothers of the children of Pratyush. Photographs on the activities of Pratyush were displayed within the campus. Two Dinners, one Lunch, two Tiffin and one breakfast were arranged for the children and their parents.

Sri Madhusudan Biswas (Kalpana Bhaban), Sri Tapan Chakraborty and Sri Dilip Bose provided their houses for exclusive use during these events. Organizers expressed their gratefulness to them for their kind help and pleasing personalities.

Mrs. Meera Banerjee, Mr. Parimal Dey, Mrs. Anjana Sinha, Mr. Manob Sinha, Dr. Kalpana Biswas, Dr. Debashis Sengupta, Mr. Saikat Sengupta, Mr. Anwar Sharif Biswas, Mr. Tirthankar Ghosh, Mrs. Sushmita Ghosh Mukherjee, Dr. Sushmita Mukherjee, Dr. Sraboni Mukherjee, Miss Mahua Nargis, Miss Reema Bhattacharya, Miss Krishnakoli Dasgupta, Smt. Ellora Mukherjee, Mr. Debashis Roy, Miss Sanjukta Malakar were present as evaluators.

Dr. Samir Banerjee, his wife and daughter attended the second day’s programme. Dr. Banerjee and Mrs. Banerjee were very much pleased to observe the performance of the children. Their sheer presence created a sense of uncountable encouragement among the children and also among the members of Pratyush.

ADMINISTRATIVE NEWS

E. C. and General Meeting:

During this period, first meeting of the members of the Executive Committee was held on 13th January, 2008 at 6-30 pm. Second meeting was held on 10th February, 2008 at 6-30 pm. Third meeting was held on 9th March, 2008 at 6 pm in the temporary office of Pratyush. Members discussed about the organizational performances of the members and guardians of Pratyush during the Annual evaluation- cum - cultural competition.

Guardians’ Meeting:

This meeting was held on 20th January 2008. Special attention was given to the problem of the spouses regarding their children’s irregular attendance in the school and Pratyush center. In addition, some ill habits of the children were also discussed.

WELLWISHERS MEET THE CHILDREN AT PRATYUSH

(1) Dr. Ananda Sen and Dr. Mousumi Banerjee and their sweet daughter Urjja (USA) came at Pratyush on 29th February 2008 at 6 pm. They met the children and came to know about their activities. They appreciated the children’s wall magazine Usha. Ananda and Mousumi enjoyed the recitation, songs and dance programme of the children. Mousumi and Urjja presented beautiful songs and the children enjoyed a lot. Besides, they visited the handicraft center of Pratyush where mothers were preparing jute based handicraft products. They purchased lots of product from that center. They brought some garments for the children. At last they distributed sweets to the children.

(2) Mr. Mihir Majumdar and Mrs. Majumdar from Birati visited Pratyush on 9th March 2008 at 5-30 pm. They brought sweets for the children and donated a significant amount of money on behalf of their son Mr. Arindam Majumdar and his wife Mrs. Joyeeta Majumdar. Both of them appreciated the activities shown by the working group of Pratyush.(3) Prof. J.K. Ghosh, Life Member and Guardian of Pratyush, visited Pratyush on 21st March, ’08. Children gave him warm welcome. They presented songs, recitation and story. Prof. Ghosh enjoyed a lot. Afterwards those children requested Prof. Ghosh for telling some stories and Prof. Ghosh complied with the requests. At the end he gave advice for academic as well as behavioral improvement under the direction of organizers. He also arranged beautiful like-minded refreshment for the children (although he sat on the floor and participated with them in the programme).

VISIT OF NSS

Smt. Swapna Ghosal and Smt. Kabita Dey, teachers and fifteen girl students of National Social Service (NSS) unit, Rammohan College, Kolkata, visited Pratyush as a part of their training programme. The students were Baisakhi De, Suparna Ghosh, Priyanka Medda, Stuti Roy, Piyali Poddar, Adrika Dawn, Arunashree Basak, Satabdi Ghosh (a), Mousumi das, Pinki Pramanik, Sonamoni Das and satabdi Ghosh (b). They play with the children, talked with them and heard recitation, songs and watched dance of the children of Pratyush. They assured that they would collect paper, pencils, used garments and money for the children and bring them in the next visit.

MEDICAL TRTEATMENT

Mafuza Bibi, mother of Pratyush, has been suffering from acute abdominal pain since six months. She is a skilled handicraft worker very much associated with the handicraft wing of Pratyush. Dr. Munshi carried out through the Ultrasonography and referred the case to Gynecologist, Dr. Jharna Chatterjee. Both the doctors were kind enough and gladly gave their valuable and effective advice for quick recovering of Mafuza Bibi.

Santosh Saha (Babu), the only guardian member of Pratyush was admitted in the Barasat hospital for a mild heart attack. Sontosh, by profession, is a van-rickshaw puller. He has been continuously assisting Pratyush for family counseling and management of Pratyush. Pratyush has been taking all sorts of medical and other essential supports for quick recovering of Santosh.


ASHIMA ADHIKARY RESCUED

Miss Ashima Adhikary, a dedicated voluntary teacher of Pratyush fell ill when she was taking a class at Pratyush. After consultation with doctor and going through the Ultra Sonography, it was settled that an operation of Gallstone is urgently required.

Giving financial support to Ashima was necessary for quick recovery. We made an appeal to our FRIENDS of Pratyush and some friends came forward. Dr. Samir Banerjee, an unbelievable human quality, stood behind Ashima for reducing the cost of treatment and extended other necessary help.

Doctors assisted during this period: Dr. Baidyanath Mukherjee, Dr. Ashim Kumar Munshi, Dr. Jharna Chattopadhyay, Dr. Jayanta Kumar Das, Dr. Amarjyoti Gupta, Dr. Ashok Mukherjee and doctors of Barasat Govt. hospital extended help and cooperation for the medical treatment of the ailments linked with Pratyush. Besides the above doctors Sri Ashim Sarkar, Convenor, Medical sub-committee, Pratyush, (presently a student of Pharmacology, Homeopathy) gave medical assistance to the children, their parents and the members of Pratyush.


PRATYUSH EXTENDS HAND TO A POOR SICK & BRILIANT SCHOLAR

Tuhin Subhra Sarkar (23), who obtained 72 % marks in M.Sc. (Zoology) and qualified the UGC NET, have been suffering from acute anemia (Hemoglobin 7.5). He is on the way of selection for Ph.D. programme under the guidance of Prof. Lakhotia at BHU. His father was working in a NGO (at Orissa) but presently he is not getting his salary due to non-availability of fund. Doctor advised him to take complete bed rest and to take iron-rich fruits, vegetables including protein diets (besides medicines). An appeal was circulated among the wellwishers, Friends of Pratyush for raising fund and the following persons came forward :

GET TOGETHER OF FRIENDS OF PRATYUSH

After the first GET TOGETHER of the friends of Pratyush at Pratyush center it was decided that we would sit together to discuss about the shortfalls of the initiatives. According ly the second GET TOGETHER was held at Anwar’s house on 17th February2008. 23 Friends were gathered there and exchanged ideas for betterment of activities for the development of children. It was unanimously decided that the Pratyush Bhaban should be completed with priority basis. The next venue of the GET TOGETHER will be Manob Sinha and Anjana Sinha’s house. The date and time will be communicated later.


SUCCESS OF OUR CHILDREN

Sabina Yasmin, Uma Adhikary and Sushmita Saha won prizes in the Sit & Draw competition & Memory game held at Vivekananda School on 31st January2008


MADHYAMIK EXAMINEE OF PRATYUSH

Khairun Nesa, Sonali Dutta and Purnima Sil, has completed the Madyamik exam 2008. This is the second batch of Madhyamik examinee of Pratyush.

ENTERTAINTMENT

Celebration – Children, members and guardians jointly celebrated the 32nd birthday of Indrani Chakraborty, daughter of Sri Tapan Chakraborty (house owner of Pratyush) on 25th February. The audience enjoyed dance, songs, recitation and mimicry, presented by the members of Pratyush.

SPECIAL DRIVE FOR EXAM

Presently there are three students of class IV participating in the Admission Test for class V. Organiser members, mainly Indra Sarkar is giving extra effort for preparation of these students. At the same time we are giving some training on the basic knowledge of standard IV. Organiser members, namely Indra Sarkar, Aniruddha Chakraborty, Soma Bibi, Kazi Abdul Azim , Nikhilesh Sengupta, Rajeeb Saha, Asim Sarkar, Laxmi Biswas, Kalyani Das, Rita Chakraborty are giving extra effort to teach other students of Pratyush for preparation of Annual examination.

IN MEMORY OF FATHER

Prof. Barun Mukherjee had expressed his wishes to feed the poor children on the day of his father late Bhaskarlal Mukherjee’s demise. Accordingly, Pratyush arranged a dinner for the children of Pratyush on 11th March 2008. Prof. Mukherjee has been always giving his support for the benefit of the poor children of Pratyush.

SAD DEMISE OF TARUN BHADURY

Honourabale Tarun Bhaduri, member of Pratyush and Secretary, Balia Bio-agro Mission (Nadia district) has passed on 7th March, 2008 at 9-23 am. in the P.G. Hospital due to Cardiac failure. He left his wife Joyshree and daughter Bratati (24) and thousands of wellwishers. Late Bhadurida was born at Shantipur (Nadia) on 12th August 1953. By profession he was an employee of Subdivisional Agriculture office, Chakdah. But he was a pioneer activist in the field of biotechnology in agriculture in Nadia district. He founded Balia Boi-agro Mission at Balia in 2001 for promoting organic farming among the farmers. He had organized number of workshops, exhibition, seminars and mobilized farmers of 19 villages both in the distrcts of Nadia and North 24 Parganas, West Bengal. There was an interactive seminar on, “Organic farming movement” held at

Pratyush Centre in memory of late Tarun Bhaduri. Renowned Agriculture scientist, Prof Pabitra Banik of Indian Statistical Institute was the main speaker. Smt. Joyshree Bhaduri (wife of late Tarun Bhaduri), Mr. Deb Narayan Biswas (President, Balia Bio-agro mission), Mr. Dilip Mondal (Member, BBAM) also spoke on that occasion. Local farmers and students participated in the seminar.

AN ANNOUNCEMENT

Initiative has been taken for formation a Pratyush Group at USA. Many of well-wishers at USA have been trying to coordinate with us but does not work properly. This group will serve that purpose. Well-wishers at USA are hereby requested to contact the under mentioned friends of Pratyush:
