Necklace – A comedy based on urban disparityNecklace is a new Bengali film directed by Sekhar Das who also directed a national award winning film Krantikal. The subject of his earlier films has been around forest and rural life. This time he has chosen a different subject based on a story titled ‘Chorer Bou’ by Prachet Gupta.
Biswanath (Ritwik Chakraborty), a chartered accountant by profession, buys a beautiful necklace for his wife Sikha (Rituparna Sengupta) to celebrate his promotion at work place. On the same night, a burglar named Keshtopada (Rudranil Ghosh) sneaked into their apartment in second floor. The couple woke up and the burglar jumped from the balcony and hurts himself. Neighbors gathered on the spot and advised the couple to admit him in hospital. Suddenly, the burglar’s wife Kanak Champa( Locket Chaterjee) rushes to the spot and started crying. After Kesto was admitted to the hospital, Biswanath brought Kanak to his flat and asks his wife Sikha to take care of her. Advising Sikha to offer some cash to the burglar’s wife to keep her mouth shut, Biswanath left for work.
Sikha lost rack of the necklace. Kanak started behaving like a queen and finds the missing necklace in the bathroom. She wears and adores it. In office, Biswanath disclosed the incident to his boss (Dipankar De) and comes to know that this particular incident also happened to other people. It’s a new fraudulent technique to earn money where a burglar falls from a height, his wife follows him to the spot and forces the home owner to pay and save his life.
Back in home, Kanak and Sikha get to know each other well. Kanak returns the necklace to Sikha. Kanak’s dream was to spend just one day of her life like a rich, affluent woman and Sikha fulfilled her dream. But Kanak cannot take the fact that she has to go back to her old life of fraud and cheating, and, she jumped from the same balcony to end her life. She was admitted to the hospital by Sikha. Both Kesto and Kanak recovered and they started a new life with a home delivery service business. Biswanath and Sikha too became their client.
Sekhar Das tried to depict and highlight the huge disparity in urban living styles. Cinematography and editing of the film is good. Rituparna, Rudranil, Locket, Chandreyi , Biplab Chatterjee had done fair job from the acting side. Music of this film has been composed by Gourab Chatterjee who is also connected to a Bengali band. The title track ‘Amar Adhikar’ is refreshing.
