Suchitra Sen is the most popular and charismatic Bengali actress ever. Suchitra Sen was the first Indian actress awarded in an international film festival. She received the Best Actress award for the movie Saat Paake Badha in 1963 Moscow film festival. Suchitra Sen and Uttamkumar created an enduring romantic duo with sparkling screen magic in Bengali cinema.
Suchitra was born on April 6, 1931 in Pabna (now Bangladesh) to Indira and Karunamoy Dasgupta. She was also known under the name Rama and went to Pabna Girls High school. She was married to Dibanath Sen in 1947. Her debut was in an unreleased film titled Shesh Kothay in 1952. Her first released film was in 1953 – Saat Number Kayedi. In 1953, she acted with Uttam Kumar in a romantic comedy named Saare Chuattor – this film became extremely popular and since then Suchitra-Uttam duo produced series of box office hits. Her husband died in an accident in 1969.
Suchitra acted in several Hindi films amongst which the notable ones are: Aandhi and Devdas. Her role in the Hindi film Aandhi under the direction of Gulzar was well acclaimed. She brought a curtain in her acting career in 1978 after the movie Pronoy Pasha and withdrew herself from any kind of public appearances. Suchitra Sen died on January 17, 2014 and was survived by her daughter Moonmoon Sen and two grandaughters, Raima and Riya.
